In our Celebrating Neuro-Affirming Professionals Series, each resource spotlights a different profession making a difference in the neuro-affirming space. It’s our way of acknowledging the vital, often unsung contributions these professionals make every day in supporting neurodivergent individuals and communities.

The Role of Hairdressers in Neurodivergent Lives

For many neurodivergent people (NDs), visiting a hairdresser can be an intensely vulnerable experience. Touch, sensory input, unpredictable conversation, bright lights, strong smells and the pressure to make small talk - all of this can feel overwhelming. But in the hands of a neuroaffirming hairdresser, the salon chair becomes a safe space.

Hairdressers are often overlooked when we think about neurodivergent-inclusive professions. But for someone with sensory sensitivities or communication differences, the experience of getting a haircut can deeply impact their comfort, confidence, and even mental health.

A hairdresser who "gets it" can transform an everyday task into a supportive, affirming encounter.

What Does Neuroaffirming Practice Look Like in Hairdressing?

Neuroaffirming hairdressers understand that every client is different. They recognise that:

  • Sensory needs vary – Some clients may be sensitive to buzzing tools, shampoo fragrances or brushing pressure.

  • Touch requires consent – They explain what they’re doing before they do it and check in regularly.

  • Communication styles differ – Some clients may prefer minimal small talk, written instructions or need extra time to process questions.

  • Routine can reduce anxiety – Predictability helps. A clear explanation of the appointment flow can make a world of difference.

And most of all, they hold zero judgement. They honour stimming, fidgeting, info-dumping, shutdowns and the many ways NDs just are.

Affirming Practice in Action

Neuroaffirming hairdressers often go the extra mile by:

  • Offering pre-appointment sensory checklists

  • Allowing clients to bring noise-cancelling headphones or comfort objects

  • Turning off overhead lights when possible

  • Offering silent appointments with no chit-chat required

  • Using visual cue cards or mirrors to check comfort levels mid-cut

  • Not rushing clients on or assuming a standard outcome

These small adjustments aren’t just "nice to have". For many NDs, they’re what makes the experience bearable, enjoyable or even empowering.

💛 A Quiet Revolution in Personal Care

When we think of advocacy and neuroaffirming practice, hairdressers might not be the first to come to mind. But the impact they have is profound. Being touched, seen and heard without pressure to mask or perform can be healing.

So if you’re a neuroaffirming hairdresser:

Thank you. You are making more of a difference than you know.
